We spent the day at Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School. We chose to go the school outside the city and were pleased with our choice. The other location is in the city, close to their restaurant. Sompon is a charming host and his staff are very friendly. The class was rather large but the set up is fabulous and our family had the cooking posts on the upper level with just 2 other people and our own intructor. Sompon hovered around, chatting, helping us stir, taste, fry etc. The organization of the school is excellent. The teaching style is very similar to that of the Blue Elephant Cooking School in Bangkok. You leave your cooking post, go to a demonstration room, where you sit in class room fashion watching the instructor cook the dish. Afterwards to return to your cooking station and magically your ingredients have appeared and now you are expected to recreate the dish. We had a very helpful instructor, which meant the girls weren't too stressed.
Here's what we did:
Vegetable Carving - which was great.
Clear soup with minced pork
Spring Rolls
Red Curry with roast duck
Chicken with ginger
Chicken in pandanus leaves
Mango with sticky rice
Stupidly, we forgot to take both the camera and the video camera on this day, so sorry, there are no photos. I'd defintely go back for another class on our next Thailand stop over. Interestingly the girls thought the food we cooked at Yui's (A Lot of Thai) was better and they preferred her more personal teaching style.
